Jibanananda: From the Pages to the Screen
By Prof. Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay
Performance
Rather than a chronological retelling, this play explores the evolution and profound depth of Jibanananda Das’s literary universe.
Phiribar Poth Nai forgoes conventional narration to contemplate an oeuvre layered with growing opacity and poetic resonance over time. It weaves together poems of similar titles across eras and publications—illuminating stylistic and lexical nuances by cross-referencing his poetry with fiction, essays, letters, and the critiques of his contemporaries.
This production stands as a heartfelt tribute to Jibanananda Das—the humanist and reclusive visionary, whose writing captured the raw truths of existence with honesty and quiet grace.
His unique syntax, deep reverence for nature, surreal images of the mundane, and rich symbolism have established him as a true pioneer of modern poetry.
Conceived by Shudrka Hyderabad in 2024 to mark his 125th birth anniversary, Phiribar Poth Nai is a poetic homage to a writer whose relevance and resonance deepen with each passing year.
